Sarah Michelle Gellar has expressed her willingness to step in for her late friend Shannen Doherty in a new film project. The former Buffy star, who shared a friendship with Doherty for over three decades, is open to replacing Doherty in a sequel to the film “Mallrats.”
The original 1995 comedy “Mallrats” revolved around two friends navigating a chaotic day at the mall. Doherty played a significant role in the movie as the girlfriend of one of the main characters. The film also featured actors such as Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, and Joey Lauren Adams.
Director Kevin Smith recently revealed his intention to move forward with the sequel project as a tribute to Doherty, who sadly passed away from breast cancer in July. Smith expressed his desire for Gellar to take over Doherty’s role in the upcoming film, stating that she would bring Doherty’s warmth to the character.
When commenting on the possibility, Gellar responded positively, indicating her support for the idea. The close bond between Doherty and Gellar was evident as they supported each other through various life challenges, including Doherty’s battle with cancer.
Gellar paid a heartfelt tribute to Doherty following her passing, emphasising the deep love and connection they shared over the years. Their friendship extended beyond the screen, with their families even spending time together during periods of lockdown.
The proposed sequel, tentatively titled “Twilight of the Mallrats,” has been in development since 2020, with Doherty originally set to reprise her role. Smith’s decision to involve Gellar in the project reflects his desire to honour Doherty’s memory and legacy through the film.
The news of Gellar potentially stepping in for Doherty has garnered significant attention from fans and the entertainment industry alike. As discussions around the sequel continue, the possibility of Gellar taking on the role remains a poignant and meaningful tribute to her dear friend Shannen Doherty.
