Charli XCX has given her thoughts on comedian Bowen Yang’s parody of her on Saturday Night Live. The British pop star was featured in a skit during the show’s 50th season premiere, where Yang portrayed her Brat era in neon-green. During an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Charli was asked about her reaction to the sketch that aired on 28th September. She expressed her admiration for SNL, mentioning that she and Troye Sivan anticipated the parody. Charli praised Yang’s portrayal, especially noting the quality of the wig used in the sketch, and overall found it to be impressive and cool.
In the SNL segment, Bowen Yang embodied Charli XCX with black curls, a pleather mini dress, and large black sunglasses, hosting “The Talk Talk Show with Charli XCX.” The skit also included a portrayal of Australian singer Troye Sivan. Charli and Sivan are currently on a joint concert tour titled “Sweat” and have released a collaborative remix of “Talk Talk.” Bowen’s sketch included comedic segments like “Brat or Nat,” where various topics were given ratings.
Charli’s response to Bowen Yang’s parody comes after Yang addressed criticisms of another controversial sketch on the same show, this time parodying US pop star Chappell Roan. Yang appeared as viral pygmy hippo Moo Deng, satirizing Roan’s comments on fame and fan interactions. Colin Jost pointed out the similarities between Moo Deng’s situation and Roan’s, prompting Yang to show support for the singer’s boundaries and mental health.
Responding to accusations of mockery towards Roan, Bowen Yang clarified his support for her through an Instagram post. Roan is set to appear on SNL as the musical guest on 2nd November. Charli XCX’s positive reception of Bowen Yang’s sketch reinforces the light-hearted nature of parody and satire in the entertainment industry, showcasing the camaraderie and mutual respect among artists in the spotlight.
