Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford recently described a “bittersweet” moment after the team’s 3-3 draw against Porto in the Europa League. Rashford scored United’s first goal with an impressive run and finish from the left wing. However, despite his contribution, United ended up squandering their lead during the match.
The draw was saved by Harry Maguire in the final moments, following Bruno Fernandes’ dismissal for the second consecutive game. Rashford was substituted at half-time, with manager Erik ten Hag later explaining that it was to keep the forward fresh for their upcoming crucial game against Aston Villa.
With his goal in Porto, Rashford reached a milestone of 26 European goals for United, with 14 in the Europa League and 12 in the Champions League. This achievement saw him surpass Paul Scholes and enter the top five European goalscorers for the club.
Wayne Rooney holds the record with 39 goals, followed by Ruud van Nistelrooy with 38, Ryan Giggs with 29, and Denis Law with 28. Rashford expressed his mixed emotions on Instagram, stating, “I’m happy to learn that I have broken into the top five scorers in Europe for United, but I’m gutted that we never managed to win tonight.”
Rashford had an impactful debut in European competitions for United in February 2016, scoring two goals as an 18-year-old. Despite a Champions League hat-trick against RB Leipzig in 2020, his goal in Porto marked his first European goal since March 2023.
Explaining the decision to substitute Rashford at half-time, Ten Hag highlighted the performance of Alejandro Garnacho. He emphasized Garnacho’s offensive prowess in creating chances, providing assists, and scoring goals. The manager clarified that the substitution was not a reflection of Rashford’s performance but rather a tactical choice to utilize Garnacho’s abilities.
Looking ahead, Rashford remains determined to continue climbing the ranks of top European goalscorers for Manchester United. His commitment and drive on the field are clear, and fans eagerly anticipate his future contributions to the team.
