Elon Musk has confirmed his participation in a campaign rally with Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, scheduled for Saturday. This significant event marks the return of the Republican presidential nominee to the location where an assassination attempt was made on him back in July.
The tech billionaire and strong Trump supporter announced his attendance on social media platform X in the early hours of Friday morning, stating, “I will be there to support!” in response to a post from the former president promoting the rally as a “historic” occasion.
The July assassination attempt involved a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who opened fire on Trump shortly after he began speaking at a rally in Butler. Trump narrowly avoided serious injury as a bullet grazed his ear, missing his right temple. Tragically, a rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, lost his life in the shooting, while two others were wounded. The gunman was subsequently shot dead by a Secret Service sniper, though no clear political motivation for the attack was ever established.
Following the shooting, Elon Musk publicly endorsed Trump in the 2024 race, praising his resilience as Trump defiantly rose from the ground, bloodied but determined, to rouse the crowd with chants of “Fight! Fight! Fight!” The incident united Republicans in support of Trump and led to criticisms of the Secret Service for perceived security failings, culminating in the resignation of bureau director Kimberly Cheatle after a contentious hearing on Capitol Hill.
In a subsequent incident last month, Trump was targeted by another alleged assailant, Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh purportedly hid near one of Trump’s Florida golf clubs for nearly 12 hours, brandishing a gun through a fence while the former president was playing golf. The Secret Service intercepted the threat, arresting Routh shortly after he attempted to flee.
Elon Musk, who faced backlash for remarks speculating on the lack of attempts on Democratic figures like Kamala Harris or Joe Biden, has firmly aligned himself with Trump and criticism of Harris as the 2024 election approaches. Additionally, Musk has hinted at potentially serving in a future Trump administration to streamline governmental operations.
