Police Scotland Investigates Fatal Car Crash Near Inverness
Police in Scotland are currently investigating a tragic incident where a driver lost their life after their car veered off the B851 road near Inverness and caught fire. The authorities were alerted to the scene at approximately 11.20am on Wednesday, October 2. Reports indicate that the vehicle left the road, tumbled down a ditch, and subsequently burst into flames. In response to the emergency, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched three fire engines to the location. Eyewitnesses observed smoke billowing from the roadside as emergency responders worked to address the situation.
Authorities have disclosed that the driver of the car tragically perished after the vehicle departed from the carriageway near Daviot village, situated to the south of Inverness. Following the incident, the road had to be closed for a duration of 30 hours to facilitate investigative procedures. Images from the site depict the charred remnants of the vehicle resting in an embankment, while forensic specialists in protective suits meticulously examined the area surrounding the crash.
In response to the severity of the situation, the case has been escalated to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner for further scrutiny. Duncan Macpherson, a councillor from Inverness South, expressed his sorrow over the distressing event, describing it as “desperately sad” in a message shared on social media.
A Police Scotland spokesperson commented on the ongoing investigation, stating, “We are investigating the death of the driver of a vehicle which left the carriageway of the B851 near Inverness shortly after 11.20 am on Wednesday, 2 October, 2024. Enquiries remain ongoing. The circumstances have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.” Similarly, a representative for the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner affirmed receipt of the case and confirmed that assessments are presently underway.
