Man City enter their post-Rodri era and the major problems have already begun

Manchester City have embarked on a new era following the injury to their talisman Rodri, and it seems they are facing major challenges right from the start. The team, which had a perfect start to their title defence, has now experienced consecutive draws since Rodri’s unfortunate cruciate ligament injury during the match against Arsenal. The midfielder’s absence has been keenly felt, as City dropped four points without his influence on the field.

Traditionally, City has had the upper hand against Newcastle United, and Pep Guardiola has often outshone counterpart Eddie Howe. However, in their latest encounter, Newcastle managed to hold City to a draw, with Anthony Gordon securing a point for the Magpies with a well-earned penalty. The absence of Rodri, who is revered as one of the best in his position by Guardiola, was especially noticeable in this match.

Without Rodri’s defensive prowess and incisive passing, City struggled to break down Newcastle’s solid defensive line. Mateo Kovacic’s desperate challenge late in the game highlighted the void left by Rodri in protecting the defence. Additionally, City lacked creativity in attack, missing the spark provided by Kevin de Bruyne. The team’s usually sharp passing seemed laboured and lacked the usual tempo and purpose, which Rodri usually contributes to.

Guardiola’s selection of players indicated the challenge of replacing Rodri’s influence with a single player, as he opted to deploy a dual defensive midfield partnership. The absence of Rodri also resulted in a shift in the team’s balance, with a focus on containment rather than attacking flair. This tactical adjustment left City with a shortage of scoring options beyond Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan.

Despite City’s unbeaten run extending to 29 league games, the recent draws without Rodri suggest a potential stumbling block in their title defence. The team will need to find a way to adapt to life without their influential midfielder and address the issues that have arisen in his absence. With four points slipping away in just one week, City will need to regroup and come up with solutions as they navigate the challenges of the post-Rodri era.
