Paul O’Grady’s Beloved £3.5m Mansion Listed for Sale Despite Planning Dispute
The exquisite seven-bedroom mansion that belonged to the late comedian Paul O’Grady has been put on the market for £3.5 million by his widower, Andre Portasio. Following Paul’s passing in March 2023 at the age of 67 due to cardiac arrhythmia, the entertainment world mourned the loss of the iconic star known for his illustrious stage career and long-standing presence on television.
Paul’s tranquil life with his husband, former professional dancer Andre Portasio, in a picturesque farmhouse in Kent captured many hearts. The couple resided in Knoll House with four reception rooms since 1999. Now, eighteen months after Paul’s demise, Andre has made the decision to sell the Edwardian property despite resolving a contentious planning dispute recently.
In August, Andre emerged victorious from a heated legal battle with neighbours over his proposal to transform part of the £3 million Kent estate into a holiday let. Following objections from some neighbours who claimed Andre was clandestinely constructing a new home, local council officials eventually approved the scheme, despite conflicting opinions about Paul’s stance on the matter.
Nevertheless, Andre has chosen to list the countryside mansion for sale through the agency Strutt and Parker. The property, previously owned by comedian Vic Reeves, is set within a 50-acre estate and boasts traditional elements like French doors, alongside quirky features such as bookcase wallpaper and a garden caravan. The house also includes a striking ‘Witches House’ and is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with four acres of woodland on the premises. Notable neighbours include comedians Julian Clary and Alan Carr.
Estate agent Strutt and Parker described Knoll Hill House as a property that offers a breathtaking view of the Romney Marsh and the sea, providing a spacious and charming living space. Paul, in his book ‘Country Life’, once expressed his excitement about the move from London to the countryside, reminiscing about the initial days in the house.
The impressive estate features a swimming pool and various outbuildings, including two self-contained cottages, a barn, and stables. It was Andre who announced the heartbreaking news of Paul’s passing last year, citing the loss as unexpected yet peaceful. The sale of the mansion marks a new chapter for Andre as he navigates through the memories and legacies left behind by the illustrious comedian.
