Dermot O’Leary has thrown his support behind The Independent’s initiative, the Brick by Brick campaign, aimed at aiding victims of domestic violence. The campaign has garnered widespread attention, including a generous £25,000 donation from Persimmon, one of the UK’s largest home builders.
The TV presenter joins a host of celebrities such as Dame Helen Mirren, Rylan Clark, Olivia Colman, and Queen Camilla in endorsing the Brick by Brick appeal. He emphasised that the Brick by Brick initiative will provide a lifeline for women and children seeking to escape harmful circumstances, offering hope to the countless individuals impacted by domestic violence on a daily basis.
With the total funds raised for the campaign now standing at £126,155, Persimmon’s substantial contribution marks a significant milestone. In the UK, thousands of women face the urgent need for safe refuge from danger within their own homes. Shockingly, statistics show that one woman is turned away from a refuge every two hours due to lack of available space.
The Independent, in partnership with charity Refuge, aims to raise £300,000 to construct a safe haven for women fleeing abusive relationships, along with any children or pets in their care. The envisioned refuge will offer safety, security, and the opportunity for survivors to rebuild their lives, symbolically one brick at a time.
Construction work on the proposed site has commenced, thanks to the generous donations from readers and high-profile figures. Persimmon’s involvement in building the refuge represents a crucial step towards realising the project’s ultimate objective. Chair of the Persimmon Charitable Foundation, Anthony Vigor, highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals fleeing domestic abuse, stressing the importance of ensuring everyone has the right to feel secure within their own homes.
The upcoming safe house will feature essential amenities such as an open-plan kitchen, dining room, living area, and a private garden. Moreover, security measures including a fireproof letterbox, CCTV surveillance, and enhanced locking mechanisms on windows and doors will be implemented to safeguard residents.
