A Lanarkshire children’s charity, Smile, has taken a new initiative by opening a fundraising shop in Larkhall to support their plans for a rural retreat for families of children with disabilities and serious illnesses. The charity was founded by Wendy and Stephen Meek in memory of their son Justin and aims to provide a peaceful space for families in need.
The new fundraising boutique, located on Union Street in Larkhall, will help Smile in providing therapies and emotional support to families as part of their ongoing work. The ultimate goal is to raise funds for a tranquil retreat in rural South Lanarkshire, where families can take respite breaks free of charge.
The charity, which stands for Special Memories In Lanarkshire Every day, offers support to children and young people up to the age of 25, along with their families, who are dealing with disabilities, cancer, or serious illnesses. Smile was established in February by Wendy and Stephen Meek, with the purpose of creating a respite facility.
The Meek family’s personal experience with their son Justin, who had a life-limiting genetic condition and passed away at the age of 10, has been a driving force behind their mission. Wendy shared that their vision is to provide a retreat where families facing similar challenges can unwind, have fun, and create lasting memories together.
The fundraising shop, operational for six weeks, offers a variety of second-hand items such as clothes, shoes, toys, and more, with all proceeds contributing to the charity’s cause. Wendy expressed gratitude for the community support in preparing the shop and emphasised the importance of raising awareness about Smile’s activities.
The shop is currently offering free Halloween costumes and is looking for more volunteers to join their team. Additionally, Smile has partnered with local businesses like Hamilton restaurant Rocca to raise funds. They have also received support from firms like Block Architects, who contributed a laptop for the charity’s use.
Smile’s long-term goal of establishing a rural retreat has been met with enthusiasm from supporters, including Justin’s younger sister, Charlotte, who recently participated in fundraising activities. Wendy highlighted the challenges faced by families with seriously ill children and reiterated the importance of providing a haven for them to relax and rejuvenate.
