However, there is a chance for the lights to be seen further south, as seen in May this year, due to intense solar activity.

According to the Met Office, Saturday night has the highest likelihood of aurora sightings further south, particularly across central England. Those eager to witness the shades of green and purple dancing across the sky are advised to look northwards and find a place with dark skies for the best viewing experience, away from city lights that can interfere with visibility.

The anticipation for this radiant display comes after a significant solar flare on Thursday, which has led to an expected increase in space weather activity. The Northern Lights are caused by solar storms interacting with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a massive flare, a powerful burst of energy, on Thursday that could lead to captivating auroral activity.

Solar flares and fast coronal mass ejections are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields that result in strong geomagnetic activity, producing mesmerising displays of the Northern Lights. Dr. Steph Yardley, a space scientist at Northumbria University, explained that the region of the Sun responsible for the flares has been notably active, with Earth-directed eruptions expected to impact the planet between October 4-6.
