Perrie Edwards: ‘Parting ways with someone can be a scary thing’

Pop star Perrie Edwards has recently revealed the inspiration behind her latest single, ‘You Go Your Way’, as she reminisced about her journey to stardom as a member of the popular girl group Little Mix. Edwards, known simply as Perrie in her solo career, unveiled the new track on Friday, accompanied by a music video directed by Charlie Di Placido, renowned for his work with the Mercury Prize-shortlisted band, Jungle.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, the 31-year-old singer disclosed that the song was inspired by a pivotal moment early in her relationship with fiance Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Edwards shared that when their romance was in its infancy, she was hesitant about the timing due to Little Mix’s upcoming tour with Ariana Grande in America. She recounted telling Oxlade-Chamberlain, “Instead of waiting for me, you go your way, I’ll go mine,” a statement that initially shocked him as he affirmed their relationship status. Edwards highlighted that while her story had a happy ending, the song resonates with listeners facing various forms of parting ways with someone, portraying it as a daunting experience initially.

The singer’s former Little Mix bandmates, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, have expressed their support for ‘You Go Your Way’ on social media, demonstrating camaraderie as they embark on their individual solo journeys. Thirlwall received acclaim for her solo debut, ‘Angel of My Dreams’, released in July, while Pinnock introduced her first EP, ‘No Hard Feelings’, in May. Discussing the band’s evolution and success, Edwards reflected that their achievements sometimes felt surreal, considering the immense popularity and accomplishments they attained since forming on The X Factor in 2011.

Moreover, Edwards candidly shared her ongoing battle with anxiety and panic attacks, acknowledging the journey of managing these struggles which fluctuate in intensity. She praised Oxlade-Chamberlain for being a pillar of strength, boosting her confidence and offering unwavering support during challenging times. Meanwhile, the singer hinted at the completion of her upcoming debut solo album, resisting the urge to make alterations to avoid missing deadlines, and expressed enthusiasm for potential live shows in the future, citing her love for performing as her ultimate joy.

Perrie Edwards continues to captivate audiences with her music, with ‘You Go Your Way’ marking another milestone in her evolving solo career. Fans eagerly anticipate more empowering and heartfelt music from the talented artist as she embarks on this exciting chapter.
