Ketchup fans stunned as health guru shows just how much sugar is in bottle

Ketchup enthusiasts were left in shock after a health expert revealed the alarming amount of sugar present in a 700g bottle of the popular Heinz ketchup. Sunna van Kampen, the founder of Tonic Health, took to TikTok to showcase the sugar content in the iconic condiment, prompting viewers to reconsider their condiment choices. With a dramatic display using sugar cubes to represent the sugar content in the ketchup, Sunna highlighted that it contained a staggering 39 teaspoons of sugar, equivalent to 159 grams in total – making up almost 23% of the bottle’s content.

Encouraging his audience to make healthier choices, Sunna urged them to be mindful of added sugars in their daily diets and opt for alternatives without excessive sugar content. While some viewers reacted with shock and agreement, others downplayed the concern by pointing out that the entire bottle is not typically consumed in one go, suggesting that smaller amounts are used at a time.

In response to concerns raised, Heinz offers a No Added Salt and Sugar version of their famous sauce, containing 50% less sugar and salt than the regular version. The company promotes this alternative as a healthier option for consumers looking to reduce added sugar and salt intake from their foods, emphasizing the same distinct Heinz flavour without artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives.

The revelation by the health guru about the sugar levels in ketchup has sparked a conversation about sugar content in commonly consumed condiments and the importance of making informed choices for a healthier diet. Heinz has been contacted for further comments on the issue.
