Singing sensation Nicholas McDonald made a poignant tribute to NHS Lanarkshire staff during an awards evening, showcasing his gratitude towards the exceptional compassion and expertise they provide. The Wishaw star, who gained fame on The X Factor, opened NHS Lanarkshire’s Staff Awards, acknowledging the profound impact the workforce has on the local community. Prior to the event, on October 2, Nicholas shared how NHS Lanarkshire’s services had supported him and his family through challenging times.

Recounting a harrowing experience at the age of eight when he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing football, Nicholas expressed his gratitude for the life-saving treatment he received at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. He continued to praise the ongoing care he has received from NHS Lanarkshire professionals as he manages a rare heart condition. Nicholas highlighted the exceptional support he received from University Hospital Wishaw’s cardiology department, emphasising the care, understanding, and expertise provided by the medical team.

Additionally, Nicholas shared how NHS Lanarkshire staff extended compassionate care to his family during the final days of both his grandparents, Mary and Sam. Reflecting on the significant roles his grandparents played in his life, Nicholas recounted the emotional support and dedication shown by hospital staff at University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Hairmyres. He commended the staff for their unwavering kindness, which brought comfort to his family during those difficult moments.
