Drought in the Amazon leads to lowest water levels in 122 years
In a concerning development, Brazil’s geological service has reported that one of the Amazon River’s main tributaries has reached its lowest water level in 122 years. This unprecedented event is a result of a severe drought that has not only affected the Amazon rainforest but also various regions across the country.
Specifically, the Negro River at the port of Manaus was measured at 12.66 meters on Friday, significantly below its normal level of around 21 meters. This current level surpasses the previous record low, which was recorded just last year towards the end of October. Predictions from the geological service suggest that the water level of the Negro River may decline further in the following weeks due to forecasts indicating low rainfall in upstream areas.
Andre Martinelli, the hydrology manager in Manaus, mentioned that the river is anticipated to continue receding until the end of the month. While water levels in the Amazon typically fluctuate with the rainy and dry seasons, the dry period this year has been notably harsh. Major rivers in the Amazon basin, including the Madeira River – the Amazon River’s longest tributary, are currently at critical levels.
The Negro River, responsible for draining approximately 10% of the Amazon basin and ranking as the world’s sixth-largest in terms of water volume, plays a crucial role. Notably, the city of Manaus, the largest urban settlement in the rainforest, is situated at the confluence where the Negro River meets the Amazon River.
