China, at the United Nations, issued a warning against the ‘expansion of the battlefield’ in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Three days before China’s communist government marks its 75th anniversary, the country’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, emphasised the importance of preventing the escalation of hostilities. He reiterated China’s commitment to facilitating diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict peacefully.
During his address at the UN General Assembly, Wang Yi cautioned against exacerbating the situation and criticised any attempts by nations to exploit the conflict for their own interests, possibly alluding to the United States. This stance aligns with China’s consistent advocacy for respecting the sovereignty of other countries, a principle deeply rooted in its foreign policy.
Despite China’s historical support for Russia, the nation has faced accusations of violating the UN Charter in its actions. Wang Yi’s speech highlighted China’s unwavering position on sovereignty, a viewpoint shaped by the nation’s own struggles to maintain control over regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. He reiterated China’s rejection of the concept of ‘two Chinas’ or ‘one China, one Taiwan,’ asserting that Taiwan will ultimately reunite with the mainland.
In addition to addressing the situation in Ukraine, Wang Yi also commented on escalating tensions in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula. Regarding the latter, he reiterated China’s support for transitioning from the armistice to a peace mechanism, underlining the nation’s opposition to external interference in East Asia.
Moreover, Wang Yi touched upon human rights issues, stating that each country should be allowed to pursue its own path of development in accordance with its national conditions. This statement comes amidst ongoing international criticism of China’s treatment of Tibetans, Uyghurs in Xinjiang, and activists in Hong Kong.
China’s proactive engagement on global issues at the UN reflects its increasing diplomatic influence and commitment to maintaining stability in regions marred by conflict. Wang Yi’s address underlines China’s nuanced approach to international relations, balancing alliances with assertive defence of its core principles.
