Linwood Conman Ordered to Repay £7,000 to Renfrewshire Gardening Scam Victims
A Linwood conman, Adam Crawford, has been ordered to repay nearly £7,000 to the families he scammed in Renfrewshire. Crawford avoided a prison sentence after appearing at Paisley Sheriff Court. The court heard that he defrauded three Renfrewshire couples between January and June last year by promising to carry out landscaping work in their gardens but instead, keeping the money for himself.
In the first instance, Crawford fraudulently took £1,650 from a couple in Houston by claiming he would do landscaping work at their home. Despite repeated requests for updates, he failed to do any work and used the money for other purposes. Similarly, he scammed another couple in Paisley out of the same amount by making false promises of garden work and then failing to deliver. In a third case, Crawford stole £3,650 from a couple in Paisley, again failing to do any work and refusing to refund the money.
Crawford, who now works for a groundwork company, expressed deep remorse and a desire to repay the victims. His defence agent acknowledged the severity of the charges and Crawford’s regret for his actions. Sheriff Morag Fraser ordered Crawford to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work in the community within 18 months and repay the stolen sums within the same period. Failure to comply could result in a jail sentence.
Crawford attended court with £300 as a show of good faith, leading to the alternative sentence being imposed. The judge emphasised the need for Crawford to make amends for his crimes and serve his community as a form of restitution. Victims of the scam were relieved that justice was served, albeit in a non-traditional manner.
This case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of due diligence and verifying the credentials of individuals offering services. Renfrewshire residents are encouraged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent falling victim to similar scams. Crawford’s story is a reminder that deceitful actions have consequences, and justice will prevail in the end.
