Militants in Pakistan have taken the lives of six soldiers in a fierce shootout in the country’s northwest region. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, marks a troubling escalation of violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, known to be a hub for various armed groups, including the Pakistani Taliban.
According to reports from the army on Saturday, the soldiers were killed during an operation in North Waziristan. The army further confirmed the deaths of six militants during the same operation. In a separate engagement in Swat, also within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two militants were eliminated, one of whom was reportedly linked to an attack on a convoy of foreign dignitaries earlier in the month.
Meanwhile, in the capital city of Islamabad, tensions remained high with a lockdown and suspension of cellphone services as a preventive measure against rallies supporting the detained former leader, Imran Khan. Videos shared by Khan’s political party depicted his supporters maneuvering through blocked roadways in an attempt to reach Islamabad. Despite hindrances posed by shipping containers, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, along with others, labored through the night to clear the path.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, to which Khan belongs, has announced plans for a rally in Lahore amidst the escalating unrest in the region.
