A Scottish schoolboy was diagnosed with leukaemia following a routine dental checkup. Kaylan Hampson, who is now eight years old, was only three when he received the devastating diagnosis back in 2019. During a routine appointment, dentists at the Children’s Hospital in Edinburgh discovered an abnormality that led to further investigations confirming the presence of leukaemia.
Recalling the moment when Kaylan was diagnosed, his father Martin, 25, shared the heartbreak of the experience, stating, “It’s a diagnosis I wouldn’t wish on any child.” The family’s life was turned upside down as Kaylan underwent various challenging treatments, including a bone marrow biopsy, a lumbar puncture, and the insertion of a chest port. The young boy had to give up playing football and missed a significant amount of school time, facing numerous hospital stays due to his weakened immune system.
Despite the hardships and moments of uncertainty throughout the treatment, Kaylan found solace and support from hospital staff and the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHS). Martin expressed gratitude for the charity’s efforts in keeping his son’s spirits up during the darkest days of treatment, mentioning activities like music performances and face painting that brought joy to Kaylan.
After three long years of battling cancer, Kaylan reached a significant milestone by ringing the bell signifying the end of his treatment at the age of seven. The young boy, now in remission, only needs to visit the hospital every six months for check-ups. In a show of gratitude for the support received during Kaylan’s journey, Martin has committed to fundraising for ECHC, participating in a charity boxing event in Dunfermline after rigorous training.
The boxing match, scheduled for 24 November at the Glen Pavilion, aims to raise awareness and funds for the vital work carried out by the charity. Martin hopes to give back and show appreciation for the support his family received throughout Kaylan’s medical ordeal.
