WeightWatchers CEO suddenly exits after drug move
WeightWatchers, a well-known diet company, has experienced a significant change in its leadership as CEO Sima Sistani has abruptly departed from her role. The company’s board member and former Shake Shack executive, Tara Comonte, will take over as interim chief executive following Sistani’s immediate exit.
Although WeightWatchers has not disclosed the exact reasons behind Sistani’s sudden departure, Comonte is poised to step into the CEO position during a crucial period where the company is honing in on enhancing its operational and financial performance.
The New York-based weight-loss company, which has been in existence for over six decades, has faced challenges recently, evident in its declining profits and mounting costs from restructuring endeavors. Additionally, its stock has plummeted substantially over time, with WW shares plummeting over 90% in the past year and now trading as a penny stock, closing at about 83 cents on Friday.
Sistani, who assumed the role of CEO at WeightWatchers over two years ago, spearheaded the company’s foray into the weight loss drug market during her tenure. Notably, WeightWatchers made a significant move with the acquisition of Sequence, now known as WeightWatchers Clinic, which offers telehealth services facilitating the procurement of prescriptions for drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity.
Prior to her tenure at WeightWatchers, Sistani co-founded Houseparty, a social networking app that has since been discontinued, specialising in group video chatting. Her previous experience includes a senior leadership position at Epic Games.
On the other hand, Comonte, who joined WeightWatchers’ board in June 2023, brings in a wealth of experience. Previously serving as the CEO of TMRW Life Sciences, a fertility company, and holding roles as president and CFO at Shake Shack, Comonte is well-versed in executive positions. In addition to her responsibilities at WeightWatchers, she also sits on the boards of Kindbody and Strava.
In a statement, Comonte expressed her eagerness to collaborate with WeightWatchers’ leadership to advance the company’s expansion strategy and bolster access and care during this pivotal phase of transformation. With Sistani relinquishing her position on the board, WeightWatchers intends to downsize its board from nine members to eight.
Earlier this year, WeightWatchers reduced its board from 10 to nine members after former talk show host Oprah Winfrey stepped down. Winfrey decided to donate all her interest to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, after disclosing her use of weight-loss medication in December 2023.
As WeightWatchers navigates through this leadership transition, the company continues to adapt and innovate within the competitive weight loss industry landscape.
