Hundreds of people took to the streets of Paris on Saturday in a powerful display of solidarity to advocate for abortion rights for women globally. The rally, organised by civil society groups to commemorate International Safe Abortion Day, aimed to not only support the right to abortion but also to call for improved access to abortion services in France.
The demonstrators highlighted concerns over budget cuts, staff reductions, and the closure of abortion centres and maternity wards, which they argue disproportionately impact and penalise women seeking abortion services. Sarah Durocher, the president of France’s non-profit family planning services, emphasised the challenges faced by women in France who sometimes have to travel to a different region to access necessary medical services for abortion, describing it as an “obstacle course” for them.
The ongoing trial of a man who drugged his wife so that multiple men could rape her while unconscious has also fuelled the urgency for action, as indicated by protester Thibault Thomas. This case has stirred a broader conversation about the protection and rights of women in France, leading to heightened awareness and activism surrounding abortion rights.
France recently made history by becoming the first country to explicitly guarantee a woman’s right to choose to terminate a pregnancy by enshrining it in the constitution. Despite abortion being legal in France since 1975 and enjoying widespread political support, the inclusion of this right in the constitution aims to safeguard against potential rollbacks as seen in the United States and elsewhere.
However, participants in the rally expressed a cautious optimism, acknowledging that the fight for abortion rights is ongoing and must be continually defended, particularly in the face of rising far-right nationalist influences in France and across Europe. The threat to sexual and reproductive rights remains a pressing concern, with Durocher stressing the importance of vigilance, as illustrated by the sobering statistic that a woman dies every nine minutes worldwide due to lack of access to safe abortion services.
The demonstration also drew attention to the interconnected nature of advocacy efforts, with a group representing Colombian women in Paris underscoring the significance of global solidarity in advancing women’s rights. Talula Rodríguez, a 49-year-old activist, highlighted the importance of unity in the struggle for bodily autonomy and choice, stating, “We are all going to fight for rights, rights over our bodies. It’s our choices.”
The rally in Paris serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing battle for reproductive rights and the collective determination of individuals to fight for gender equality and women’s empowerment on a global scale.
