Attempts to cross the English Channel on small boats have tragically resulted in the deaths of four migrants, including a 2-year-old child, according to French authorities. The incidents occurred in two separate events as the migrants attempted to make their way towards Britain.
France’s Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, has described the deaths as a “terrible tragedy”, highlighting that the child was “trampled to death in a boat”. Retailleau also placed blame on smugglers, stating that they have “the blood of these people on their hands” and committed to intensifying efforts to combat the criminal networks profiting from these dangerous crossings.
This heartbreaking news adds to a series of recent shipwrecks that have made 2024 the deadliest year in recent memory for migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. Just last month, 12 individuals lost their lives when a migrant boat capsized in the Channel, followed by another incident two weeks later where eight migrants perished in a similar attempt.
In one of the incidents, rescuers found a 2-year-old child dead on a migrant boat that had requested assistance. Fourteen other migrants on board were rescued and brought back to France for questioning, while a 17-year-old with leg burns was taken to a hospital in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Tragically, some individuals on the boat chose to continue their journey towards Britain despite the risks.
Another incident involved three migrants who died and several others who were rescued after falling off an overloaded boat carrying 83 passengers. The prefect of Pas-de-Calais, Jacques Billant, described a scene of panic and stampede leading to the fatalities, with the victims likely being crushed, choked, and drowned in the water at the bottom of the inflatable boat.
The migrants involved in these incidents hail from various countries including Eritrea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran, Ethiopia, Libya, Syria, Egypt, Kuwait, and Iraq. The prosecutor has initiated investigations into both tragedies.
The European Union’s tightening asylum regulations, coupled with rising xenophobia and inhospitable treatment of migrants, have been driving individuals northward, seeking refuge and a better future. Before these latest events, French authorities had already recorded at least 46 migrant deaths in attempts to reach the U.K. this year.
As the world grapples with this ongoing crisis, authorities are urged to step up efforts to address the root causes of migration and prevent further loss of life in perilous journeys across the seas.
