Boris Johnson is under fire from Amber Rudd for what she calls his “two-faced” and “untruthful” account in his memoir. The former Home Secretary, known for her confrontational style, has criticised Johnson’s book, “Unleashed”, likening it to a comic book rather than a serious work.
Rudd has labelled Johnson as “Johnson the Janus”, a nod to the Roman god Janus who is often associated with being two-faced or deceitful. In her scathing review, she accuses Johnson of lacking integrity and only acting in his own self-interest.
The criticism comes following doubts raised about some of the claims in Johnson’s book, including a disputed conversation with Prince Harry and his stance on the Partygate scandal. Rudd, who famously sparred with Johnson during the EU referendum campaign, does not hold back in her assessment of his writing.
Describing the book as “farcical rather than factual”, Rudd paints a picture of Johnson as a split personality, oscillating between bombastic and calculated. She highlights his past indecision on Brexit and suggests that his motivations have always been self-serving.
In her review, Rudd concludes that anyone expecting a insightful account of Johnson’s time in office will be disappointed, as the book reads more like a comic strip than a serious political commentary. She warns against taking Johnson’s writing at face value, portraying him as a figure driven by personal ambition rather than genuine statesmanship.
