A displaced family’s year of fleeing across the devastated Gaza Strip
The Abu Jarad family lost the stability and comfort of their northern Gaza home when Israel launched its campaign in retaliation for Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. Ne’man Abu Jarad, his wife Majida, and their six daughters embarked on a journey across the Gaza Strip to survive amidst the destruction caused by Israeli forces.
Their previous life in northern Gaza was filled with routine, love, and safety, where family and neighbours gathered for moments of joy. However, the conflict turned their world upside down, leading them to flee multiple times in response to Israeli evacuation orders. Amidst the chaos, they found themselves in unfamiliar settings, living in overcrowded schools, makeshift tents, and eventually, amid a sprawling refugee camp.
The conflict displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, creating a humanitarian crisis with thousands of families uprooted from their homes. The Abu Jarads, like many others, went from a comfortable middle-class life to facing deprivation and uncertainty. They endured harsh conditions in overcrowded shelters, lacking basic necessities like water, food, and sanitation.
As they moved from one temporary shelter to another, the family’s sense of despair grew. The once familiar comforts of home were replaced by a daily struggle for survival. The mental toll of the constant threat of violence and displacement took its toll on the family, leading to moments of heartbreak and longing for their former life.
The Abu Jarad family’s story is just one of many in Gaza, where thousands are grappling with the aftermath of relentless conflict and displacement. Their journey highlights the resilience and endurance of families caught in the crossfire of political strife, clinging to hope for a return to a semblance of normalcy amidst adversity.
