A Palestinian student living in Scotland is desperately trying to bring his displaced family from Gaza to the UK and has called upon the UK Government to establish a visa scheme similar to the one implemented for Ukrainians. Mahmoud Almassri, 31, originally from Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, left his hometown in 2017 to pursue higher education. Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October the previous year, he has been striving to get his family – including his parents, siblings, and relatives – out of Gaza, where they are currently living in a tent near Al Qarara in southern Gaza.
The situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire for Almassri’s family, who have been displaced multiple times within a short span of two weeks. Despite occasional talks of ceasefires, the family remains in a state of despair, with little hope for improvement in the violence between Israel and Hamas. Almassri, a PhD student studying in Edinburgh, has been advocating for a special visa scheme that would facilitate the relocation of Palestinians facing similar crises to the UK.
He highlighted the success of visa programmes extended to Ukrainians fleeing conflict and urged the UK Government to show similar compassion towards Palestinians. Almassri’s efforts to secure a safe passage for his family have faced challenges due to the lack of available exit routes for foreign nationals in Gaza. While the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has explored alternative options, there is no designated visa scheme for Palestinians akin to the Ukraine Family Scheme.
Almassri emphasised the urgency of the situation, pointing out the urgent need to help innocent people escape the ongoing violence in Gaza. He shared the story of his sister, who missed an opportunity to study in Scotland due to border restrictions. Despite the obstacles, Almassri remains committed to doing everything in his power to assist his family and others in similar predicaments, leveraging his access to resources in the UK to provide support.
In response to the plea for a dedicated visa scheme for Palestinians, a Home Office spokesperson stated that existing pathways are continually under review in light of the events in Gaza. Palestinians seeking to reunite with family members in the UK are advised to utilise the available visa routes. Almassri’s call for humanitarian aid echoes the sentiments of many facing similar struggles in conflict zones around the world, urging governments to extend compassion and refuge to those in need.
