1 dead as Russia strikes Ukraine with drones and missiles

In a recent attack by Russian forces on Ukraine, one person has been reported dead after being struck by 87 Shahed drones and four different types of missiles overnight. The tragic incident occurred in the Kharkiv region, where a 49-year-old man lost his life when his car was hit by a drone, as announced by regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Additionally, Ukrainian officials revealed that a gas pipeline was damaged, and a warehouse was set ablaze in Odesa city due to the assault.

The Ukrainian air force issued a statement stating that they successfully intercepted and destroyed 56 out of the 87 drones and two missiles across 14 Ukrainian regions, including the capital, Kyiv. It was reported that 25 drones went missing from radar, presumably due to anti-aircraft missile defense measures.

This attack comes on the heels of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent declaration that he will unveil his “victory plan” during the Ramstein group meeting on October 12. The plan, which includes Ukraine’s aspiration for NATO membership and acquiring long-range missiles to target Russia, was shared with US President Joe Biden during Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington last week. Although the specifics of the plan have not been made public, Zelenskyy commended the country’s armed forces for their bravery and preparedness for future endeavors.

In a social media post on Sunday, Zelenskyy praised the Ukrainian troops for showcasing their capabilities when equipped with adequate weapons and support. He emphasized the necessity for more decisive actions to end the ongoing conflict and urged international partners to recognise that mere deployment of drones is insufficient in achieving peace. Zelenskyy emphasised the importance of taking progressive steps to bring the war to a close.

The situation between Russia and Ukraine remains tense, with both countries engaged in a conflict that has drawn international attention and concern. As the world watches the evolving developments in the region, efforts are being made to address the escalating crisis and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing hostilities.
