The clash between Newman, 50, and Peterson, 62, took place in 2018 during a viral interview on the gender pay gap, which has garnered close to 50 million views on YouTube. The discussion unfolded amidst a tense period in feminist dialogue, particularly with the rise of the MeToo Movement, attracting attention from individuals associated with “incel culture,” who targeted Newman for her line of questioning.
Speaking at the Henley Literary Festival on Sunday, Newman shared her experience of facing persistent abuse from fans of Peterson. Despite being a staunch advocate for women’s rights, Newman admitted feeling weighed down by the responsibility to conduct the interview appropriately. Reflecting on the aftermath of the interview, she acknowledged the impact of the online abuse she endured, including threats of violence and invasion of privacy. Newman disclosed receiving disturbing messages, such as pictures of knives with blood and threats of rape, which she found deeply troubling.
Expressing the challenges posed by the backlash, Newman highlighted how the relentless abuse and threats have impeded her ability to perform her job effectively. She recounted the difficulties faced due to the continuous stream of vitriol, which made it hard for her to focus on her work. Moreover, Newman mentioned the lack of support from Channel 4, citing a rushed preparation process for the interview, further complicating the situation. Despite receiving positive feedback from women appreciative of her stance during the interview, Newman also mentioned encounters with young men who criticized her, to which she responded defiantly, asserting that she is undeterred by such negativity.
