Ezri Konsa Faces England Doubt Following Injury as Unai Emery Updates on Condition
Ezri Konsa is a cause for concern for England’s defensive lineup after sustaining a hamstring injury during Aston Villa’s recent clash with Manchester United. The centre-back had to be substituted in the 12th minute of the game and is likely to miss out on Lee Carsley’s squad selection for the upcoming matches against Finland and Greece. Villa manager, Unai Emery, commented, “I think it is [his] hamstring. I don’t know if it is big or small.”
Konsa, who has earned eight caps for his country, put on an impressive performance in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. He was chosen over Harry Maguire when Carsley announced his 25-man squad earlier. However, Maguire may also be unavailable for selection as the Manchester United defender had to be subbed off alongside Noussair Mazraoui. Maguire was seen leaving the field with his foot in a protective boot, and United boss Erik ten Hag mentioned, “We have to take them off at half-time. Tomorrow we have to see what is the diagnosis on it.”
Ten Hag further explained that the decision to substitute Marcus Rashford during the game was to prevent the forward from receiving a red card. Rashford, who had already been booked for a challenge on Matty Cash, committed another foul on Jaden Philogene. Ten Hag stated, “That was one of the reasons to take him off. If it was another foul probably he would be sent off. We can’t take another risk.”
