Liam’s stepfather, Barry Sandman, criticises the school’s decision, stating that the haircut helps alleviate Liam’s eczema symptoms by keeping his head cool. The stress of being removed from class reportedly worsened Liam’s skin condition.
After a haircut on September 21 that did not meet the school’s standards, Liam was sent to a behavioural unit on September 26. His mother intervened, and Liam returned to school on September 30 once his hair had grown slightly. However, Mr Sandman argues that Liam should have been exempt from the haircut policy due to his medical condition.
Mr Sandman has expressed frustration with the school’s response, highlighting that Liam’s haircut is practical and common among teenagers in the area. The family provided medical documentation, but the school did not consider the need for a skin fade due to Liam’s eczema. Mr Sandman criticised the school for disrupting Liam’s education during his crucial GCSE year.
Despite the parent’s complaints, headteacher Jon Richardson maintains the school’s stance on uniform policies to ensure equality and focus among students. The school has offered to discuss the concerns with Liam’s family but reiterates that no formal complaint has been made. The parents are scheduled to meet with the headteacher next week to address the issue further.
