Two boys, aged 12 and 13, have been arrested in connection with an assault on former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa. The incident took place on Manhattan’s Upper East Side while the pair were out for a walk on Friday evening. Paterson, who is 70 years old and legally blind, along with his stepson, were treated for minor facial injuries at a local hospital. The former governor also sustained injuries to his body during the attack.
The youngsters have been charged with gang assault, but their identities have not been revealed due to their status as minors. Authorities disclosed that at least five individuals were involved in the altercation, and they are seeking information from the public to aid in their investigation.
David Paterson, a Democrat who served as governor from 2008 to 2010 following Eliot Spitzer’s resignation, denounced the assault on Saturday. According to Paterson, the incident occurred after his stepson encountered some of the perpetrators while walking the family dog. After a confrontation, Paterson and Sliwa later engaged in a verbal exchange with the group before two of them physically attacked the pair.
Despite his son’s valiant efforts to fend off the attackers, Paterson suffered a laceration on his face that required several stitches. The stepson, Anthony Sliwa, is the son of Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels anti-crime organisation.
Paterson’s tenure as governor marked a significant moment in New York’s history, as he became the state’s first Black governor. The assault on him and his stepson has sparked outrage and concern in the community.
