Sir Keir Starmer has marked the 7th of October anniversary by calling for an immediate ceasefire and declaring that “we must never look the other way.” The Labour leader described the date as the “darkest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust,” commemorating the attacks that took place a year ago.
On this day in 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel led to subsequent conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Over a thousand people, including men, women, children, and babies, were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists. Sir Keir emphasised the unimaginable pain and grief faced by the families of the victims, stating that the collective grief has not diminished even a year later.
In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Sir Keir reiterated the need to stand unequivocally with the Jewish community and urged the country to unite against hate.
