Scottish parents are facing a crisis as ‘crippling’ childcare costs are forcing many out of work or eating up more than half of their wages. Rhiannon Neale, a photographer in Scotstoun, spoke out about the challenges she faces with childcare costs for her two children, Charlotte and Poppy. She highlighted the strain of paying £900 a month for Poppy’s nursery care for just 2.5 days a week, forcing her to work late into the night after putting the kids to bed. Rhiannon, originally from Canada, expressed shock at the exorbitant childcare fees in Glasgow compared to her home country where costs are significantly lower.
Poppy, who has Rett syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, requires specialised care that comes at a high price without any financial assistance for the family. Rhiannon emphasised the need for affordable childcare to enable parents, especially mothers, to work without being financially burdened. She underlined the impact of high childcare fees on families, making it challenging for parents to balance work and family responsibilities.
Lesley Collins, who runs The Mum Club Glasgow, echoed these sentiments, noting that many parents are unable to afford the rising childcare costs, making it impossible for them to return to work or progress in their careers. The community has witnessed growing concerns among new mothers about the financial pressure of childcare fees alongside other household expenses. Lesley highlighted the desire of mothers to contribute financially and advance in their careers, but the current childcare prices are a significant barrier to achieving these goals.
Daycare Trust director, Stephen Burke, drew attention to the wider issue of childcare affordability across the UK, emphasising that families are struggling with the highest childcare costs in Europe.
