The United States has allocated a record amount of at least $17.9 billion in military aid to Israel since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza, leading to heightened tensions across the Middle East. This sum, as revealed in a report by Brown University’s Costs of War project, was disbursed following the attacks by Hamas on Israel.
In addition to the aid provided to Israel, an additional $4.86 billion was channelled into increased U.S. military operations in the region post the October 7, 2023 attacks. This includes funding for a Navy-led effort to address strikes on commercial ships by Yemen’s Houthis, who are showing solidarity with Hamas.
The report, compiled before Israel launched a second front against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon in late September, sheds light on the estimated costs incurred by the U.S. as it supports Israel in conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, and works towards de-escalating tensions with Iran-aligned armed groups in the area.
These financial investments come alongside a significant loss of human life, with more than 1,200 individuals killed by Hamas in Israel, while Israel’s retaliatory actions in Gaza have led to nearly 42,000 casualties. Similarly, in Lebanon, around 1,400 individuals, including Hezbollah members and civilians, have lost their lives due to the escalated strikes by Israel.
The financial figures were calculated by Linda J. Bilmes, a professor at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, along with researchers William D. Hartung and Stephen Semler. The breakdown of the expenditure reveals that a substantial portion was allocated to military aid for Israel, spanning from munitions to missile defense systems.
The U.S. commitment to aiding Israel and Egypt annually has been a longstanding practice, with the recent agreement setting Israel’s aid at $3.8 billion per year until 2028. The report also highlights the challenges in obtaining comprehensive details of the aid provided, citing bureaucratic obstacles.
The Biden administration has ramped up military presence in the Middle East to deter and respond to threats against Israeli and American forces, with additional operations costing over $4.86 billion. These actions, along with efforts to counter the heightened attacks by the Houthis, have necessitated a considerable financial investment by the U.S.
Efforts to quell strikes by the Houthis, who have targeted merchant ships in the Red Sea, have resulted in a costly and complex operation for the U.S. military. This asymmetric challenge has seen the deployment of various resources, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and missiles, against lower-cost drones utilized by the Houthis.
