Dumfries and Galloway Council’s headquarters will be illuminated in pink, purple and teal to mark Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Joining over 70 landmarks across the UK, the council will take part in the Make 2nds Count’s Shine a Light initiative. The charity focuses on providing hope through education, support, and research funding for secondary (metastatic) breast cancer. The goal is to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Scheduled for Sunday, October 13, the council’s buildings in English Street will shine a light on the only day dedicated to raising awareness of secondary breast cancer. Make 2nds Count aims to shed light on incurable secondary breast cancer, emphasizing the need for increased awareness, support, and research funding. The community in Dumfries is encouraged to visit the council offices on October 13, witness the illuminated display, share photos on social media using #ShineALight, and engage with the 1000 Truths stories on the Make 2nds Count website.
With an estimated 61,000 people in the UK living with secondary breast cancer, and 1,000 lives lost each month to this condition, the initiative seeks to address a concerning lack of awareness. A recent survey revealed that 38% of respondents were unfamiliar with secondary breast cancer, while 21% did not know the symptoms to watch for.
In addition to the symbolic lighting up of landmarks, the campaign serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for increased understanding and support for those affected by secondary breast cancer. As the community comes together to raise awareness and show support, the hope is to make a meaningful impact in the fight against this challenging disease.
