Halle Berry has expressed her gratitude towards director Matthew Vaughn for walking away from the X-Men film after she was reportedly deceived into reprising her role as Storm by the studio. The Oscar-winning actor acknowledged Vaughn for shedding light on the shady tactics used behind her back, stating, “Thank you Matthew Vaughn for bringing the dark to light.”
Berry revealed that she felt tricked into returning as Storm in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” which was directed by Brett Ratner and marked the final instalment in the original X-Men trilogy. She had previously portrayed the weather-controlling mutant in the first two films of the series.
In 2023, Matthew Vaughn, who was originally slated to direct the film, disclosed that he decided to quit the project upon discovering how 20th Century Fox allegedly manipulated Berry into signing on for the sequel. Vaughn shared that he stumbled upon a fake script during a meeting with an executive, crafted to entice Berry by prioritising her character in a pivotal scene.
During a panel at New York Comic-Con, Vaughn recounted the incident, revealing, “I saw an X3 script. It said, ‘Africa. Kids dying from no water, and Storm creates a thunderstorm to save all these children.’ They said, ‘This is Halle Berry’s script because she hasn’t signed on yet. This is what she wants it to be. And once she signs on, we’ll throw it in the bin.'” Vaughn expressed his dismay, stating, “If you’re going to do that to an Oscar-winning actress who plays Storm, I quit.”
Berry, unaware of the manipulation at the time, featured in the film. However, upon learning about Vaughn’s revelations, she took to TikTok on 5 October to share her astonishment, emphasising the importance of shedding light on such deceitful practices.
The fallout led Vaughn to direct a different project instead, but he later helmed “X-Men: First Class” in 2011. Meanwhile, Berry returned to portray Storm in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” directed by Bryan Singer, in 2014. The saga illuminated the complexities and challenges faced by actors in the entertainment industry, underscoring the significance of transparency and integrity in filmmaking.
