A man on day release from prison was tragically shot dead by a gunman outside his family home. Carl Russell, 27, was ambushed outside his parents’ home at around 11.30 am on October 7, 2018, as he stepped out of his girlfriend’s car at Cornwood Close in Belle Vale. The suspect, wearing an orange high-visibility jacket and riding a pedal bike, opened fire with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, fatally shooting Mr. Russell.
Despite extensive investigations by Merseyside Police, no one has been charged with the murder. Three men were arrested on suspicion of murder but were later released under investigation. A reward of £20,000 was offered for any information leading to the conviction of the killer. Mr. Russell had a history with the police, having previously been jailed for possession of a firearm. In 2010, he survived another attempt on his life when two armed men entered his home and shot him in the head.
Investigators have been open-minded about any possible links between these incidents. At the time of his death, Mr. Russell was serving a sentence for dangerous driving but was out on day release. Detectives expressed curiosity about how the gunman knew Mr. Russell’s whereabouts, as very few people were aware of his visit to his family on that fateful day.
On the anniversary of Mr. Russell’s death, detectives appealed for information from witnesses, specifically seeking details about a white Nissan Primestar van and a taxi driver who may have overheard crucial conversations on the day of the murder. They also highlighted a male suspect seen in the area wearing high-visibility clothing and riding a bike.
The community was urged to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. Merseyside Police can be contacted via 101, @MerPolCC on Twitter, or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has pertinent information.
The heartbreaking incident, which occurred in broad daylight, continues to haunt Mr. Russell’s family, who seek closure and justice for their loved one. The case remains open, and authorities are determined to find the perpetrator responsible for this brutal act of violence.
