Work will commence this Thursday, October 10, to fully repair the damaged A90 Glencarse Overbridge located between Perth and Dundee. The anticipated 10-week project, expected to cost £840,000, aims to restore the bridge’s load-carrying capacity and ensure full reopening of the road on the bridge. The undertaking, managed by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, is projected to cause disruption on the main road connecting Perth and Dundee. A contraflow system will be implemented to manage traffic flow during the repair works.
In March 2023, the Glencarse Overbridge sustained substantial structural damage after being hit by a digger. The incident necessitated extensive and intricate repairs to ensure the safety of road users. While temporary fixes were made to remove loose and damaged concrete, allowing the A90 to reopen in November 2023, the primary deck component remained deformed. This led to the installation of single lane traffic lights on the bridge flyover towards St Madoes for safety precautions.
Following a meticulous procurement process, Amey has secured the necessary expertise to conduct repairs that will enable the removal of these temporary traffic lights. The repair work will involve installing temporary propping, replacing the damaged section of the steel beam, carrying out concrete repairs on the bridge deck, and replacing the damaged bearing that supports the beam. Additionally, Amey will seize the opportunity to perform ancillary maintenance work at the site, such as bearing replacement on the south support and repainting, to avoid future closures for maintenance.
To facilitate the repair process, a traffic management plan will be implemented. Starting from 7.30pm on Thursday, October 10, there will be intermittent lane closures and a 50mph speed limit in place to establish the contraflow traffic arrangement. By 7.30pm on Saturday, October 12, a full contraflow system will be operational, with single lanes open in each direction on the northbound carriageway between Kinfauns and Glendoick. The A90 southbound off slip to St Madoes will be shut during the repairs, redirecting southbound traffic to the next A90 exit at Kinfauns for northbound access before exiting at the next off slip.
