A renowned Perthshire furniture designer and master craftsman, Angus Ross, has been awarded a prestigious commission to create a unique collection of hand-crafted furniture for a well-known restaurant in Scotland. Over his impressive three-decade career, Angus has been celebrated for his transformation of sustainable Scottish wood into exquisite pieces for various settings, from homes and gardens to public spaces. His notable clients include The National Trust, The Athenaeum in London, The Wolds Way National Trail in Yorkshire, and The John Muir Way.
Recently, Angus was chosen by the world-class Three Chimneys restaurant on the Isle of Skye to craft a bespoke range of furniture for their establishment located on the picturesque shores of Loch Dunvegan. Initially tasked with creating new drink cabinets, the commission expanded to include coffee tables and bedside tables. Angus shared his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “I make high-end furniture, and The Three Chimneys provide exceptional food and hospitality at a very high level, so it felt very nice to be bringing that same attention to detail into the bedroom furniture.”
To gather inspiration for the designs, Angus and his wife Lorna visited The Three Chimneys in January, immersing themselves in the ambiance and service of the renowned establishment. For the project, ash wood was chosen for its light colour and character, sourced and milled by Scottish Wood near Dunfermline. The resulting furniture is described as contemporary, fresh, crisp, light, subtle, and fun, drawing influence from the vernacular woodwork found in old Skye buildings.
Angus Ross’s work has garnered recognition in prestigious interior design publications such as Elle Decoration, Vogue, and Homes & Gardens. He showcases his creations at renowned events like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, London Design Fair, and London Craft Weeks. Originally hailing from Inverness, Angus transitioned from an industrial designer to a skilled furniture maker over 30 years ago, focusing on artisanal craftsmanship.
The furniture crafted for The Three Chimneys features unique elements like asymmetrical tapered legs, tongue and groove shelves, and visible joint craftsmanship. The pieces highlight the natural beauty of the ash wood, with the coffee table showcasing the wood’s grain on the tabletop. The drinks cabinet combines solid wood with tongue and groove accents, embracing the natural imperfections of sustainable non-commercially grown timber.
