Former Formula 1 team principal, Otmar Szafnaeur, recently disclosed that he personally covered the salaries of his team members to the tune of millions of pounds when Force India faced severe financial challenges. Szafnauer, who joined Force India in 2009 and was part of its transition into Racing Point and then Aston Martin under Lawrence Strollâs ownership, made this revelation on The High Performance Podcast.
Force India experienced notable success during the mid-2010s before encountering financial turmoil that led to the team going into administration in 2018. To support his team through these tough times, Szafnaeur chose to pay the staff’s wages himself. However, he opted not to inform the employees about this extraordinary gesture. Reflecting on this decision, Szafnauer shared, “It wasn’t that much. It was in the millions.”
The Romanian-American motorsport executive further elaborated on the situation, explaining that he used funds from his partnership with Soft Pauer, a software company, as well as his personal resources to ensure the team members received their salaries. Szafnauer highlighted the challenge of managing cash flow in such circumstances, noting the delicate balance between ensuring immediate financial obligations were met and anticipating incoming revenue from Formula 1 events.
Szafnauer underscored the significance of maintaining team morale and unity during the crisis, emphasising the importance of looking out for one another. His dedication to supporting his team during their financial struggles demonstrated his commitment to the individuals working under his leadership. Following his time with Aston Martin, Szafnaeur departed from the team in January 2022 and later took on the role of team principal at Alpine before stepping down in July 2023.
