Dentists are warning the TikTok generation to stay away from DIY braces. TikTok is a popular platform for finding innovative tips and trends, but some trends can be harmful, especially when it comes to dental health. One particularly risky trend involves DIY braces, aimed at enhancing one’s smile inexpensively. However, dentists caution against these fake fashion braces as they can lead to painful and irreversible damage to teeth. Dr. Joana Ferreira, a dentist at The Neem Tree Dental Practice, expressed concern over the DIY brace trend, also known as ‘fashion braces.’ These decorative braces are applied at home without professional guidance, posing significant risks to oral health. The braces, often advertised as a quicker and cheaper alternative to professional orthodontic treatment, can cause issues like cuts, infections, and gum problems due to improper fitting. The use of non-medical glue like superglue can be toxic if ingested and may irritate oral tissues, potentially leading to decay. Dr. Ferreira emphasised the importance of consulting a dentist for teeth straightening. Professional assessment and treatment planning by a dentist are crucial for safe and effective outcomes. Dentists stressed the need for controlled and gradual teeth movement, highlighting the risks of self-application, which can damage roots, gums, and jawbones. Improperly placed braces can cause pain, bone structure damage, receding gums, and misaligned teeth. DIY braces can have the opposite effect by worsening dental alignment and necessitating costly corrective treatments in the future. It is crucial to seek professional dental advice for any orthodontic issues to avoid long-term harm to oral health.
