Scientists invent artificial plant that cleans indoor air and generates electricity

Scientists at Binghamton University in New York have developed an innovative artificial plant that not only cleans indoor air but also generates electricity, offering a sustainable solution with multiple benefits. The artificial leaf, created by the team using five biological solar cells and photosynthetic bacteria, was initially intended for recreational purposes before its practical applications were realised.

This proof-of-concept plant, featuring five artificial leaves, has shown remarkable capabilities in generating electricity, producing oxygen, and efficiently removing CO2 from indoor environments. Compared to natural plants, the artificial plant demonstrated a significantly higher rate of CO2 reduction, addressing the limitations of traditional methods such as ventilation and filtration amidst increasing outdoor CO2 levels due to global warming.

The researchers highlighted in their study, titled ‘Cyanobacterial Artificial Plants for Enhanced Indoor Carbon Capture and Utilisation’, that these artificial plants harness indoor light to drive photosynthesis, achieving a notable 90 per cent decrease in indoor CO2 levels from 5000 to 500 ppm. This surpasses the 10 per cent reduction typically observed with natural plants, marking a significant advancement in environmental technology.

Similar to natural plants, the artificial plant requires water and nutrients to function effectively. Future iterations could integrate enhancements to minimise maintenance requirements, potentially incorporating multiple bacteria species. The scientists aim to further scale up the technology to enhance its practical utility, envisioning a future where such artificial plants could be integrated into everyday households.

Professor Seokheun Choi from Binghamton University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering expressed his vision for the innovation, stating, “I want to be able to use this electricity to charge a cell phone or other practical uses… With some fine-tuning, these artificial plants could be a part of every household. The benefits of this idea are easy to see.”

The findings of this groundbreaking research have been published in the scientific journal Advanced Sustainable Systems, offering a glimpse into the potential of artificial plants to revolutionise indoor air quality and energy generation. The development of this artificial plant represents a significant step towards sustainable living and environmental conservation, paving the way for innovative solutions to address modern challenges.
