Lawyers representing the suspect linked to the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann have requested his acquittal in a German trial concerning separate sexual offense charges. The legal team called for the 47-year-old German national, identified as Christian Brueckner in local media, to be cleared of two counts of rape and two of sexual abuse, while urging the court to dismiss a third rape charge.
Prosecutors had previously recommended a 15-year prison sentence for Brueckner, along with preventive detention upon completion of the term. However, the defense argued for his acquittal, claiming there was never sufficient evidence against him. Lawyer Friedrich Fülscher emphasised the lack of credible witnesses and evidence, insinuating that his client’s connection to the McCann case influenced his prosecution.
Brueckner has been standing trial since February for alleged offenses committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. His defense team highlighted the absence of substantial evidence and questioned the credibility of witnesses. Fülscher suggested that without the association with the McCann case, Brueckner might not have faced charges.
Although Brueckner is a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, he has not been formally charged. Having spent significant time in Portugal during the period of the toddler’s disappearance in 2007, he denies any involvement. Currently serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape in Portugal, Brueckner remained incarcerated despite the lifting of an arrest warrant due to the existing prison term.
