A young couple, Nathaniel Bacchus from Devon and Karin Kohlmetz from Denmark, are facing challenges due to Brexit-related UK visa rules as they hope to live together and start a family. Nathaniel, 24, and Karin, 26, met online in May 2022 and have been in a long-distance relationship, meeting a few times in the UK and Denmark. The couple now dreams of marrying and settling down in the UK, but they are hindered by the increased salary threshold for spouse or partner visas, set at £29,000 earlier this year.
Nathaniel, who left his job at a supermarket to improve his qualifications, does not currently meet the income requirement. To apply for Karin’s visa, the couple would need a substantial £88,500 in savings. In response, they have taken to crowdfunding to ask for help, expressing their frustration at the evolving visa regulations post-Brexit that seem to make their plans unattainable.
Karin expressed the emotional toll of their situation, describing it as having “your heart in two different places.” She explained the difficulty of managing the longing to be together while dealing with the realities of their current separation. The couple hope to see the visa requirements ease in the future, enabling them to close the distance permanently.
With their future plans hanging in the balance, Nathaniel and Karin have shared their story to raise awareness of the challenges faced by long-distance couples under the new visa regulations.
