Sam Cane is gearing up for his final appearances in the iconic black jersey of the All Blacks, as New Zealand has announced their settled squad for the upcoming November Tests. The former captain, Cane, will conclude his illustrious international career by the end of 2024. However, he has secured his spot in Scott Robertson’s 36-man squad for the upcoming tour.
There were speculations in the New Zealand media that the seasoned duo of Cane and scrumhalf TJ Perenara might be left out to make room for new talent, especially with their imminent move to Japan at the end of the current season. Yet, Robertson has opted for continuity as the All Blacks look to bounce back from losing the Rugby Championship title to South Africa.
The squad sees just one change from the group that emerged victorious in the recent Rugby Championship matches against Australia. Cam Roigard makes a comeback after recovering from a serious knee injury and impressing with two tries for Counties Manukau. His return adds depth to the scrumhalf position alongside Perenara and Cortez Ratima.
Notably, Crusaders halfback Noah Hotham, who made his test debut against Fiji, misses out on selection. Robertson expressed his excitement about having Roigard back in the squad, highlighting the form and potential he displayed in his recent performances.
The All Blacks are set to kick off their tour with a match against Japan in Yokohama on 26th October before facing England at Twickenham on 2nd November. Subsequently, they will go up against Ireland, France, and Italy in what promises to be a challenging series of games.
Robertson emphasised the significance of the Northern Tour in shaping their gameplay and providing opportunities for both established and emerging talents within the squad. The coach believes that the mix of experience and fresh faces will help in evolving their game and tackling tough competition.
The squad for the end-of-year Tests features a blend of established stars and promising newcomers across both forwards and backs positions. With a focus on continuity and growth, the All Blacks aim to make a mark in the upcoming matches and continue their legacy of excellence on the rugby field.
