Argentina’s national team goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, has been hit with a two-match ban for what has been described as “offensive behaviour,” according to a statement from the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
The suspension means Martinez will be unavailable for Argentina’s upcoming South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against Venezuela and Bolivia in October. The incident leading to the ban occurred during matches against Chile and Colombia earlier this month.
During the game against Chile, Martinez, who plays for Aston Villa, celebrated by making a lewd gesture with the trophy. This came as a follow-up to a similar celebration after winning the Copa America in the United States. In another incident following the match against Colombia, the 32-year-old was reported to have struck a local television camera.
In response to these actions, the AFA issued a statement asserting Martinez’s responsibility for his offensive behaviour and the violation of fair play principles. They also expressed their disagreement with the decision made by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee.
Despite the suspension at the international level, Martinez’s availability for club duties with Aston Villa remains unaffected. He is expected to play in the upcoming match as Unai Emery’s side faces Ipswich.
Argentina currently leads Conmebol’s qualifying standings with 18 points from eight matches, holding a two-point lead over Colombia in second place. The top six teams in the standings will secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
