A tragic incident unfolded in Bury town centre when a cyclist, Nathan Pilling, fatally struck a pensioner, Michael Dawson, with a single punch during a dispute over riding on the pavement. The retired engineer had confronted Pilling about his cycling on the pavement on the night of 24 August the previous year. In a shocking turn of events, Pilling’s punch caused Dawson to fall to the ground, hitting his head and losing consciousness. Despite efforts to revive him, Dawson passed away in hospital less than two weeks later.
Following the attack, members of the public courageously pursued Pilling as he attempted to flee the scene on his bicycle. Quick action from the public led to Pilling’s apprehension by the police, resulting in his subsequent arrest. In a recent court hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court, Pilling was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years and four months in prison for his role in Dawson’s tragic death.
Describing the victim as a “charismatic, kind man,” Dawson’s family expressed their devastation over the loss of Michael. Known for his love of walking, involvement in various walking groups, and passion for singing karaoke to bring joy to others, Dawson’s absence was deeply felt by those who knew him well.
The incident, captured on CCTV footage, showed the initial exchange of words between Dawson and Pilling escalating into a fatal physical altercation. Pilling was seen riding his bike on the pavement when Dawson intervened, leading to the confrontation. Upon being confronted, Pilling struck Dawson with such force that Dawson had no chance to defend himself before falling to the ground.
Despite claims of self-defence during police questioning, Pilling was found guilty of manslaughter in a court of law. Investigating officer, Phillip Reade, emphasised the unprovoked nature of the attack, expressing gratitude towards the members of the public who intervened to assist Dawson and ensure Pilling was held accountable for his actions. The officer reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards violence, underscoring the importance of removing instigators of violence from the streets and bringing them to justice.
