Harris pledges to crack down on illegal crossings as she challenges Trump on immigration

Vice President Kamala Harris has vowed to crack down on illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border as she challenges former President Donald Trump on immigration issues. Speaking at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona, Harris emphasised the need for an orderly and humane immigration system that strengthens the country.

Harris criticised Trump for urging Republicans to vote against a bipartisan immigration and border reform package earlier this year, which aimed to enhance border security measures. She highlighted the importance of providing resources for US Border Patrol agents and customs officers to effectively carry out their duties, including hiring more personnel and acquiring technology to detect substances like fentanyl.

Expressing her commitment to supporting comprehensive border security measures, Harris stated that she would sign the same bipartisan bill into law if it reaches her desk as president. She also pledged to work across party lines and leverage new technologies to address immigration challenges, drawing on her experience combatting transnational criminal organisations while serving as California’s attorney general.

In her visit to the US-Mexico border, Harris outlined plans to change asylum rules to deter illegal border crossings and prioritise combating the trafficking of dangerous narcotics like fentanyl. She emphasised the importance of ensuring an orderly and secure immigration system, proposing penalties for unlawful border entry and advocating for enhanced border enforcement measures.

Harris’s visit to the border region is part of her strategy to counter Trump’s divisive rhetoric on immigration, positioning herself as a leader focused on practical solutions rather than political gain. By championing pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and promoting bipartisan cooperation on immigration reform, Harris aims to address longstanding issues in the US immigration system.

The vice president’s proactive stance on immigration comes as Arizona faces challenges related to border security and asylum seekers. By engaging with law enforcement officials and discussing strategies to enhance border protection, Harris seeks to demonstrate her commitment to effective immigration policies and national security.

Overall, Harris’s recent remarks underscore her determination to address immigration issues comprehensively and collaboratively, setting a contrasting tone to the divisive approaches of the past. As the US presidential election approaches, Harris is positioning herself as a candidate who is dedicated to upholding the rule of law, securing the border, and fostering a more inclusive and cohesive society.
