Israel’s strike killing Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has marked a significant escalation in their ongoing conflict, raising fears of a wider war. The Israeli military claimed that in addition to Nasrallah, Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and Abbas Nilforushan, a prominent general in Iran’s paramilitary guard, were also killed in the strike. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called on people to support Hezbollah and confront Israel, emphasizing the pivotal role of the forces of resistance in the region.
The killing of Nasrallah has drawn widespread condemnation from regional leaders, with calls for retaliation and accusations of crossing red lines. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden termed the killing a ‘measure of justice’ for Nasrallah’s victims.
British officials echoed calls for a ceasefire and a political resolution to prevent further escalation of conflict. The Foreign Office urged British citizens in Lebanon to evacuate immediately, hinting at the potential for deteriorating security conditions.
As tensions rise, Israel braces for possible retaliation and anticipates challenging days ahead. The Israeli military spokesperson highlighted the significance of Nasrallah’s elimination, describing him as one of the biggest enemies of Israel and asserting that his removal has made the world a safer place.
Nasrallah, known for his role in ending Israel’s occupation of south Lebanon in 2000 and fighting to a stalemate in 2006, had been living in hiding due to fears of assassination. The recent strikes have intensified the conflict, with Israel continuing airstrikes and mobilising additional reserve soldiers.
