World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has expressed his surprise and disappointment at the decision made by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to appeal against a ruling that found him not at fault for two positive doping tests. The Italian player, who recently won the US Open, faced positive tests for an anabolic steroid in March, but an independent tribunal concluded on August 20 that Sinner bore no negligence and imposed no penalty.
According to Sinner, the banned substance entered his system during a massage from his physiotherapist, who inadvertently used a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut on their finger. Despite the tribunal’s ruling in his favour, WADA has chosen to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, aiming to enforce a potential ban of up to two years on the 23-year-old athlete.
Following his victory over Roman Safiullin at the China Open, Sinner shared his reaction to WADA’s appeal, stating, “I’m very disappointed and also surprised by the appeal to be honest. I was not expecting it. Maybe they just want to make sure everything is in the right position.”
WADA’s decision to appeal was announced on a Saturday morning, challenging the tribunal’s determination of ‘no fault or negligence’ in Sinner’s case. The agency is seeking a period of ineligibility ranging from one to two years but does not intend to disqualify any past results achieved by the player.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) also responded to WADA’s appeal, acknowledging the appeal and the decision-making process that led to the tribunal’s initial ruling. The ITIA respects WADA’s right to appeal and reiterated the adherence to anti-doping regulations throughout the investigation and tribunal proceedings.
As the tennis community awaits further developments in this case, Jannik Sinner remains focused on his performance on the court, advancing to the quarter-finals of the China Open amidst the ongoing appeal process.
