Scientists grow ‘lost tree’ mentioned in Bible using mysterious 1,000-year-old seed

Scientists have successfully grown a rare tree mentioned in the Bible using a mysterious 1,000-year-old seed, as reported by The Independent. The seed, discovered in a desert cave near Jerusalem in the late 1980s, has led researchers to cultivate a sapling they have affectionately named “Sheba”. This seed, measuring about 2cm in length, was dated to between 993AD and 1202AD.

After numerous attempts, researchers have identified that the tree belongs to a unique species within the Commiphora family, known for its aromatic gum resins found in Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. The tree is believed to be the long-lost source of the medicinal balm known as the “Judean Balsam”, cultivated exclusively in the desert region of southern Levant during Biblical times.

The resin of this tree, referred to as ’tsori’ in Biblical texts, was highly prized in the ancient world for its versatile uses such as in perfume, incense, cataract medicine, embalming agents, and antidotes. Despite its historical value, the Judean Balsam disappeared from the Levant region by the 9th century, making the discovery of the ‘Sheba’ tree even more significant.

DNA analysis of the tree has revealed that it may have been used during Biblical times for grafting to produce the legendary perfume tree Judean balsam. The leaves of the ‘Sheba’ tree contain biologically active compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, indicating its potential medicinal value.

Researchers hope that studying the flowering and fruiting process of the ‘Sheba’ tree will provide further insights into its comparison with modern-day species. This groundbreaking research not only highlights the historical significance of resurrecting ancient species but also sheds light on the importance of preserving plants of cultural importance.

The successful cultivation of this ‘lost tree’ from a centuries-old seed showcases the intersection of ancient history and scientific innovation, offering a glimpse into the botanical treasures of the past that may hold valuable insights for the future.
