The Strictly stars with previous dance experience, from Tasha Ghouri to JB Gill

Strictly Come Dancing 2024 is gearing up for its latest season, and as fans eagerly await the show’s return, speculation is rife about which celebrity contestants may have an edge due to their previous dance experience. With many participants on the show coming from backgrounds in acting, singing, or performance, it’s not uncommon for some to have received formal training in dance or theatrical arts. This trend has led to criticism from viewers who argue that these contestants hold an unfair advantage over others and have made the competition more intense in recent years.

Last year, Layton Williams faced similar scrutiny for his dance background from West End productions, sparking debate among audiences about the level playing field on the show. As this year’s lineup unfolds, it includes notable figures such as a professionally trained commercial dancer, a former JLS member, and a musician with West End performance experience, adding to the anticipation and speculation surrounding the upcoming season.

One of the contestants, Tasha Ghouri, gained recognition as a finalist on the 2022 season of Love Island before entering the Strictly ballroom. Having trained as a dancer at Creative Academy in Slough, Ghouri brings a wealth of experience in commercial dance to the show. Despite her background, she acknowledges the challenges of transitioning to ballroom and Latin dance styles, emphasising the need to adapt and relearn techniques as she embarks on this new journey.

Another familiar face on this year’s show is JB Gill, known for his success with the boyband JLS. Gill’s dance experience from music videos and tours has prepared him for the physical demands of Strictly, as he aims to showcase his talents on the dance floor. Reflecting on his readiness for the competition, Gill acknowledges the rigorous training ahead while bringing his charismatic stage presence to the forefront.

Joining the lineup is EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick, who recently triumphed in the 2023 Christmas special of Strictly. Trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, Borthwick’s diverse skills in singing, acting, and dancing position him as a competitive and versatile contender. With a quick turnaround between his two Strictly appearances, Borthwick is eager to demonstrate his growth and adaptability in the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, veteran performer Toyah Willcox brings a wealth of experience spanning over four decades in the entertainment industry. With a background in music, acting, and even West End shows, Willcox’s willingness to embrace new challenges underscores her dedication to the art form. As she embarks on her Strictly journey, Willcox acknowledges the unique demands of the show and the rigorous physical and artistic challenges that lie ahead.

As the excitement builds for Strictly Come Dancing 2024, fans can expect a diverse mix of talent and backgrounds among the celebrity contestants, each bringing their own flair and experience to the dance floor. Stay tuned as the season unfolds, showcasing the captivating performances and compelling journeys of these stars as they compete for the coveted glitterball trophy.
